Education team climb to new heights
St Christopher’s Education team on the Isle of Man have been challenging young people to move out of their comfort zone this summer by offering them the opportunity to try a range of outdoor activities.
Education Support Officers Wayne Hickey and Tracey Walker have been donning wetsuits, hardhats and climbing harnesses to lead sessions for young people who have been willing to take a step into the unknown. The daredevils tried activities like abseiling and surfing.
Supporting young people to reach out of their comfort zones is key to St Christopher’s social pedagogic approach. Staff and young people learn alongside each other as equals in all of our services – this helps them to build positive relationships with one another and to boost self-esteem as they master a new skill.
Tracey said: “It was great to see the young people across the services having a laugh together and giving things a go.”
Wayne is now working regularly with the Education Team so there will be many more chances for everyone to join in the fun.
